It’s official. Following the lead of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian government will be combining our existing 5% GST with an 8% provincial sales tax component, into one harmonized salestax (HST) - effective July 1, 2010. So what does this really mean for the average Ontario taxpayer?For starters, it means 13% tax will be added to a range of goods and services that were not previously affected by the provincial tax. This includes items such as:
